t was built from 1334～1392 in the Nanbokuchou period.
In the year 1467, the third monk was there, the famous priest Rennyo escaped from the religious war and tried to get power.
This temple owns a lot of his property.
The 11th monk was the famous poet Basho's student and his name was Sena so, people call it Sena temple too.
Basho visited a lot of times and left poems.


1-22-30 Honkatata Otsu-city

Ukimidou(Mangetsuji temple)was built by the famous monk called Genshin from Mt.Hiei to pray for the safety of
transportation on the lake and the redemption of the people.
Known as the setting of "wild Geese Alighting at Katata,one of the eight scenic spots of Omi.
Their Kannon seated statue is an important cultual asset.
A monument of Basho is in the temple too.


1-16-18　honkatata otsu

This temple is closely connected to the priest Rennyo and there are a lot of momentos and anecdotes.
Their story "Katata Genbei and his son " is well known and the son's skull is still enshrined.
Genbei dedicated his son's head to get their treasure(Rennyo's portrait)back.


1-22-20 honkatata otsu city

The famous priest Ikkyu's master, called Kasousoudon, built this temple about 1394～1428.
Ikkyu trained here for over 10years and he got spiritual enlightment on a boat at the age of 27.
Ikkyu and his masters wooden statues are in their hall.
Basho visited here too and left a poem.

Head of Katata port's house.
The garden was built by the tea master Senno Soutan's students Called Shakuken Fujiwara and Yuan Kitamura
from Katata.


2-12-5 honkatata otsu city

In the Nanbokuchou period(year1336～1392）,shougun Yoshisada Nitta lost the war and sheltered his wife in Katata.
He escaped to Hokuriku but died 3 years later.
His wife despaired and threw herself into lake Biwa.
People in Imakatata sympathized and buried her.
Her tomb is in Nogami jinja shrine.

It's located North of Biwako Ohashi bridge.
It's a beautiful gently sloping beach with white sand and pine trees.
A very scenic place like ancient poetry.
This beach is one of the best beaches for Marine sports. you see a lot of people in summer.


3 imakatata otsu city

Used to be at the base of Mt.Mandara and was one of the three thousand temples of the Tendai Buddhist Denomination
but later joined the Rennyo sect.
In the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate, the son of the 13th monk of this temple called Yoshitane Sannomiya tried to overthrow the shogunate with the patriots.
As he was a diplomat, he rescued a crisis between Russia and Japan.


5-17-36 mano otsu city

This shrine is also closely connected to the Mano family.
Sanyare festival is known as a festival of prayer for good harvest with fire.


942manofumon otsu city

This shrine is recorded in the ancient shrine book made in the Heian period and is closely connected to the Mano family.
The main building is an important cultural asset.

4-7-2mano otsu city

t's standing 400m west of route 161. showing where the lake inlet used to be.
We can see how the ancient inlet was broad and deep.

4 mano otsu city

They are thought to have been built between the middle to the end of the tomb period.(year 250～600)
There are over 167 and a lot of them are circular and cave type stone huts.
They are thought to have been built by the Mano family or Otomo family.


taniguchicho mano otsu city

This park is next to the group of Kasugayama tombs on Katata hills.
There are a lot of tombs and ponds inside the park.
It has protected the tombs and has been preserved for people and gives a relaxation and activity place for the public.

Guardian of the whole area of Ohgi.
We don't know who built but, it's in an ancient shrine book.The deified a general Mitsunaka MInamoto in the Heian period.(year 794～1185)
He was from Hyogo prefecture and made a base of Seiwa Genji group.
There are places he lived and historical sites connected to him.
Ohgi festival which is also called Dorotamatsuri is on 3rd May every year and is famous.


4-38-55 ohgi otsu city

Ohgi drum is for the festival of Ogura jinja shirine.
It's not arranged drumming for a show but, many people drum sideways with bent knees.
It is very dramatic.
Specially these days, the local children drum show is popular.






4-2-50 ohgi otsu city

It takes us to Yokawa , Saitou and Toudou and top of Mt.Hiei from Ogi.
It was built in year 1966. You can get a good view of lake Biwa,Mt.Hira and the east side of Lake Biwa.


2 ohgi otsu city

Princess Tabiko who became the wife of emperor Kanmu and gave a birth to prince Otomo Shinnou(emperor Junwa) but died 2 years later.
When she died, she left a will which said she wants to be buried under Nagi tree in her home town.
So she came back to this town and named the place Modoroki jinja shrine.
Since then a lot of people visit the shrine to pray for a safe return.


518 tochucho ikadachi otsu city

When Otsu kyo got transfered in year 667, prince Hegurino aska no Mahito was given this place and deified eight gods, so named this shrine Hassho jinja(eight gods shrine)







1316 shimozaichicho ikadachi otsu city

Priest Ouinshuho shounin escaped to this place from a revolt in Ounin and built this temple.
Third Sunday in September every year, Kenpon choshoku rokudoue painted in Kamakura period(year1185～1333)
which is an important culture asset is displayed.

1160 shimozaichicho ikadachi otsu city

Ancesters of family Ryu found fossils of 400000 year old asian elephant in year 1804 in the Edo period.
It's kept in the National museum now and a reproduction is in the recycling plaza in Kitazaichi.


minamishocho ikadachi otsu city

When prince Toru Minamoto(year 822～895)who was the 12th son of emperor Sagano lived here, he buried one mirror.
After a while an officer dug up the mirror and defied it as a god and built the shrine.

You can study an agricultural district on a mountainside.



1223-1 shimozaichicho ikadachi otsu city

Ｈｅａｄ monk Souou felt the spirit of the god" Fudo" and built this temple and the statue.
Since then it's been known as a Tendaikaihougyo which is a training place for monks,
A lot of people including it's aristocrats and shoguns visited to experience miraculous virtue.
In the Muromachi period, shogun Yoshinao Ashikaga and his mother Tomiko visited and wrote their names on a wooden tablet.
A dynamic drum spinining show on 18th July every year is famous.
